Indian Railways and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) have signed an agreement to develop a Gati Shakti multi-modal cargo terminal on the outskirts of Jammu.
The project, to be located at Bajalta, is aimed at strengthening freight movement and enhancing the region’s energy supply chain by improving logistics efficiency for petroleum transportation. Being developed under the Centre’s Gati Shakti initiative, the terminal will support integrated infrastructure planning and better coordination between railways and public sector enterprises.
The facility is expected to play a critical role in enabling smoother and more reliable movement of fuel and other cargo. It will have a total storage capacity of 109,225 kilolitres and the capability to handle two rail rakes per day, translating into a monthly supply capacity of approximately 1.62 lakh tonnes of petroleum products.
The project is also set to reduce dependence on road transport by shifting freight movement to rail, thereby lowering logistics costs and carbon emissions. Overall, it is expected to ensure uninterrupted, year-round fuel supply to strategically important regions of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
